Episode #5: In this STATE OF MIND episode Debra Sloss, LMFT is joined by peer & NAMI educator Hugh McCormick and parent & NAMI educator Emily Chapman to talk about mental health recovery and the support, education and advocacy programs the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) has to offer to those with mental illness, family members and loved ones. Hugh shares his harrowing story of how his life as a college student was completely derailed by mental illness, how he stumbles upon the possibility of recovery through NAMI’s peer programs and how he came to a decision to begin his own recovery journey. Hugh is now a peer group leader, an educator teaching free NAMI classes to peers, families and mental health providers as well as serving as an advocate working in a variety of capacities to educate and shape policy on mental health issues. In this show Emily also shares about her experience of being parent of a teen and now young man experiencing mental illness and how NAMI programs provided a vital lifeline when she was paralyzed by overwhelm and how her involvement and volunteerism as an educator and advocate with NAMI has continued to support her and her family. Emily also shares information about NAMI’s many educational programs, support groups and advocacy roles.
