On Talk of the Bay, Monday, June 27, 2022 Christine Barrington and Talk of the Bay Co-Host Suki Wessling explore the impact of the County’s new funding model for awarding non-profit grants across the region. In 2015 the county set a new intention for how they disburse funds with a program called C.O.R.E (Collective of Results and Evidence-based Investments) that emphasizes equity and opportunities for new non-profits to receive county support. After seven years in development and rollout,  the process this year yielded major funding shifts with mixed emotions within the nonprofit community. The first half of the show welcomes Debora Bone of Family Services Agency and Ray Cancino, CEO of Community Bridges. Both are organizations with a decades-long history of serving Santa Cruz county but whose funding was largely severed just weeks before their new fiscal year. Debora and Ray will share insights into the CORE grant funding process from their perspective and what this funding shift means for the future of their agencies.

In the second half of the program Cheryl Fraenzl, Executive Director of the Diversity Center,  will talk about her vision for the future of this agency. The county supervisor meeting on 6/28 will confirm whether their grant proposal is approved for funding an in-house clinician to head their developing wellness program and what it will mean for the local LGBTQ+ community in the tri-county area.
