Reflections on Attending A Cabrillo Name Change Community Forum

On August 7 the Cabrillo College Board of Trustees will meet to decide on a new name for Cabrillo College. The name-change process began in June of 2020 when a name-change petition request signed by one-hundred individuals was presented to the Board of Trustees.  After a deliberative and educative process the Trustees voted to change the name on November 14, 2022. Polarization and bitterness, as well as hope and optimism, have marked the community conversation since that November vote.

In the effort to engage community input around the choosing of a new name for the college, members of the Name Change Subcommittee held five community forums over June and July. Talk of the Bay hosts Ami Chen-Mills Naim and Christine Barrington attended the Felton Library meeting on July 12 and offer their reflections and insights on the process, as well as some commentaries gathered from participants during the meeting.
