John Hunt is a collaborator at the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation and a research toxicologist at the University of California, Davis. For over 20 years he co-directed the Marine Pollution Studies Laboratory at Granite Canyon on the Big Sur Coast, doing water pollution research around Monterey Bay and throughout California. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Environmental Studies from UCSC and has published 60 scientific journal articles.

His most recent work has been in support of wetland restoration and other water resource management projects. He has served for 12 years on the Santa Cruz County Commission on the Environment, which focuses primarily on climate change risk reduction and environmental justice.

He recently joined a small team at the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation to write a successful grant proposal to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to fund climate adaptation projects that make vulnerable Monterey Bay communities more resilient to climate change impacts. The proposal brought together 21 partners from around the region to join the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation to help reduce risks from floods and wildfires and build capacity for future climate adaptation work.
