Do citizens of Santa Cruz have a real say in development? The case of the 175-unit Riverfront project

Talk of the Bay host Len Beyea interviews Ron Pomerantz, one of 3 signatories to a letter to the Coastal Commission appealing the City of Santa Cruz’ approval of a new 175-unit development fronting on both Front Street and the Riverfront Parkway in downtown Santa Cruz. The appeal alleges that the project does not satisfy the City’s own Local Coastal Plan nor the California Coastal Act, including increasing the height above the standard 45′, and even above the discretionary limit of 70′, to 81′, and by utilizing density bonuses, ironically provides a smaller percentage of affordable units than City ordinances ordinarily require.

The image above is a rendering of the project, as seen from the Laurel Street bridge, as presented by the developer.
