Andrea Most is an author, teacher, and activist who teaches environmental humanities courses at the University of Toronto. As someone concerned about the environment and climate change, she felt intensely frustrated as she watched scientists struggle to convince people that climate change was a real emergency. She came to understand that our environmental crisis is not just about energy use and economic indicators – our relationship to the world around us is driven by culture, specifically a western cultural crisis rooted in the foundational myths of western culture. The realization that the environmental crisis has its origins in culture led her to feel hope and showed her how her English literature students could make a real difference in the world.
