Seeing is not Believing

Many of us were raised with the belief that “Seeing is Believing,” and that our sense perceptions are giving us an objective view of the world around us.  However, the mental processes involved are much more nuanced, and our brains have evolved to “thin slice” our sense of reality to make sense of the enormous amount of data our sense organs are feeding it.  While this has been an indispensable adaptation for survival, if we’re not clear about some of the assumptions behind our quick assessments, we can make misleading — and sometimes very dangerous — snap judgments about people and situations.  Join Venerable Tenzin and guest host Mathew Divaris for a wide ranging conversation on how we can bring awareness to our snap judgements to bring them into better alignment with reality, and avoid the pitfalls of our unconscious biases.
