On Talk of the Bay, January 24, 2022 Christine Barrington interviewed KSQD’s chief engineer, Sandy Stone, for the ongoing series: Behind the Mic

KSQD is grassroots radio created mostly by community members volunteering their gifts for the sheer joy of doing what they do. But, who are these people connecting the wires, spinning the tunes, and sharing tales with local and national personalities? Their stories will likely surprise and delight you. So join us while we pull back the curtain to discover who lives and breathes behind the mic!

Before anyone can even imagine approaching a microphone there is an entire world of equipment that must be installed, integrated, and maintained, and our guest tonight is Sandy Stone KSQD’s Sound Engineer.Without her there would be hot air and good intentions, but not much else flowing through these microphones.

Sandy Stone’s life has traced an arc through this world that is richly hued and full of some magnificent twists and turns. She is a trans woman, born before WW II and slated with the task of navigating a world hell bent on defining the gender narrative–little did that world know that a skilled narrator had emerged on the scene and would change the gender discourse forever. Sandy engineered sound for some of the greatest artists and performers of the 60’s and 70’s. She is a specialist in the fields of neurology and telephony, sound recording, and computer programming  She is a published author, and a university professor emeritus–often credited as the founder of the academic discipline of Transgender Studies. She is a performer of cultural theater, and, lucky us, KSQD’s head engineer.

Sandy Stone contains world, for a taste of that world visit her webpage: https://www.sandystone.com or enjoy this article from Wired Magazine: “Sex and Death Among the Cyborgs”

Her Posttransexual Manifesto The Empire Strikes Back rocked the world of cultural studies and has been a continued influence across the globe, inspiring thousands to find their voices and reclaim their own narrative.
