Jean Pirano, right, runs the United Nations Store in
Downtown Santa Cruz and has been a lifelong activist

Jean  Pirano (84) is a quiet, but  consistent activist,  a “slack-tivist,” as she says with a big smile. Pirano came to Santa Cruz in the late-1960’s, worked for the Grey Bears managing their warehouse, and became a card-carrying member of the Santa Cruz Communist Party. Jean is so old, she says, that she walked out of a Bob Dylan coffee-house show in the early 1960’s. Jean can be seen most days at the United Nations store on Pacific Avenue.
