On Talk of the Bay, join host Suki Wessling in a conversation about how UCSC’s Humanities Institute is nurturing graduate students and a connection with the Santa Cruz Community. UCSC Dean of Humanities Jasmine Alinder says that students and faculty are happy to be back in person and adjusting to life on campus with masks and vaccination/testing restrictions. The university is moving forward in its attempt to rethink graduate education and promote a more holistic approach for their students. The Humanities Institute is a hub for new directions in research and teaching, cross-discipline collaboration, and public engagement. At THI, UCSC students can take part in such community-linked projects as The Deep Read and Watsonville is in the Heart, both of which nurture the connection between higher education and the community that it interacts with.

In the second half of the hour, graduate student and THI Public Fellow Morgan Gates joins us to talk about the exhibit that she co-curated at the Museum of Art and History, “Do You Know My Name?” This exhibit features the stories of a number of everyday people who influenced the culture and history of Santa Cruz in ways large and small. We’re then joined by one of the people featured in the exhibition, Rhonda Harper of Black Girls Surf. Harper talks about her love of the ocean and connection with Santa Cruz, and how the experience of taking part in this exhibition affected her sense of connection with the community.
