October is LGBTQ+ History month. The idea was developed by the first out gay high school teacher Rodney Wilson in Missouri in 1994. He chose October because the LGBTQ Marches on Washington occurred in October in 1979 and 1987. In addition, National Coming Out Day is October 11 every year.
On this show, two students, Max Bhatturcharji, who attends Kirby High School, and Ash Immoor, who attends El Nido High School, share their thoughts about LGBTQ+ history month and how LGBTQ+ History is taught in their schools.
In California, back in 2015, there was a law passed called the FAIR Education Act which requires history teachers to include LGBTQ+ history in their teaching. Then in 2016 a law was passed called the Healthy Youth Act that said that when students are taught sexual health, that it must include queer health such as information about same sex relationships, consent and sexual health. The students talk about how these laws have been implemented in their schools.
