Julie Reynolds is a freelance investigative reporter whose work has been published by The Nation, American Prospect, Newsweek, NPR, The News Guild and other outlets. She’s a co-founder of the bilingual, nonprofit news site Voices of Monterey Bay. Recently, her work has centered on investigating Alden Global Capital, the hedge fund that owns The Santa Cruz Sentinel, the Monterey Herald, the Mercury News and hundreds of other local newspapers.
In her research, Julie discovered that Alden Global Capital is also actively buying up mobile home parks, raising rents as much as 60%, and evicting residents en masse. We discuss the role of private equity firms like Alden Global and their impact on the economy and quality of life.
