This month DJ Dupsie continues The Sunday Dinner Summer Music Series with local artists RicoR, Manny Florendo, and Roland Reyes. In between the songs played live in the studio, we reflect on the art of spoken word and the power of openness because the world has been so divided lately. RicoR, Manny, and Roland, have been spending so much time in the open mic circuit, meeting new musicians and people that care about openness and music through the lens of openness and positivity and the importance of spreading that message.
Spoken word has historically always been a way to free the mind from atrocities and trauma, the history of spoken word goes back to the West African griots who were inherently storytellers, and they would use spoken word to represent community and dealing with grief and real issues. Using spoken word to achieve a sense of harmony and community and just as a way to “wink” towards certain issues.
