Tim Thomas is the recipient of the Ed Ricketts Award from NOAA’s Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary along with Rumsen-Ohlone Tribal member Linda Yamane. In this interview, Tim Thomas discusses the sardine and abalone fishery in the Monterey Bay, and Lisa Uttal of the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration discusses the Ed Ricketts award named for the famous marine biologist referenced in John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row, and why this award is so perfect for the two recipients. The Ed Ricketts awards will include a talk by the two recipients on November 8th at the Marine Sanctuary Discovery Center in Santa Cruz.

Public invited to join NOAA’s Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary for the annual Ed Ricketts Memorial Award and Lecture.
The 2023 Ed Ricketts Memorial Award will be presented to Tim Thomas and Linda Yamane, Monterey area cultural historians who have made significant contributions to the field of historical ecology.
Tim Thomas (Maritime Heritage and Fisheries Historian) will speak about early collections of the White Abalone by the young Japanese American abalone diver Roy Hattori, and the unresolved history of its scientific name.
Linda Yamane (Rumsen Ohlone Artist, Historian and Culture Bearer) will share her journey of discovery of her Native heritage culture, through language, songs, baskets, boats, dance regalia, and material harvesting; all of which reflect the richness of the Monterey Bay area, the relationship its indigenous people have always had with the land, and the depth of their resourcefulness and esthetic values.
The Ed Ricketts Memorial Lecture is organized by Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The award was created to honor scientists who have exhibited exemplary work throughout their career and to advance the status of knowledge in the field of marine science. The first award was presented in March 1986 at a conference at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Recipients are selected by the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Research Activity Panel (RAP).

NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries serves as the trustee for a network of underwater parks encompassing more than 620,000 square miles of marine and Great Lakes waters, an area nearly the size of Alaska. The network includes a system of 15 national marine sanctuaries and two marine national monuments that conserve areas with special ecological, cultural and historical significance.
