California Local is obsessed with all things involving the Golden State, from its history to the news of the day. After launching last year in eight counties (including Santa Cruz, our headquarters), we are expanding soon—with the eventual goal of covering all 58 counties. We offer our members one-click connections to community groups, and government officials, as well as real-time data on traffic and weather and a curated digest of local news stories. Founder Chris Neklason and Managing Editor Sharab Street discuss the state of journalism and their new project to fill the gaping hole left by the cannibalization of newsrooms by hedge funds.

Rachel is host of Talk of the Bay and Board Chair of KSQD. She is the producer of radio documentaries such as Southern Songbirds: The Women of Early Country and Old Time Music, The Boomtown Chronicles, and Pastures of Plenty, a History of California Farmworkers. She teaches journalism at Cabrillo College in Aptos. She is a recipient of a Peabody award for excellence in journalism.
