Voices of Recovery: Living with Psychotic Symptoms (Remix)

Episode 84: Psychotic symptoms—often collectively referred to as psychosis—can occur as part of many different illnesses and are characterized by difficulty distinguishing what is real from what is not. Psychosis itself is a symptom, not an illness, and it’s more common than most people realize. In the U.S., as many as three out of every hundred people will experience an episode of psychosis in their lifetime, due to a mental health condition or a medical one.

Early treatment makes a significant difference: Those who receive help sooner tend to recover more fully and have better long-term treatment outcomes. Yet many people live with psychotic symptoms for a year or more before getting the care they need. Understanding what psychosis is and how to recognize it can make all the difference in helping someone access timely treatment and support.

In this remixed and updated version of our original episode, host Debra Sloss revisits this important topic with Dr. Jennifer Davis, a double board-certified general and child-adolescent psychiatrist, and two individuals in recovery who share their lived experiences and insights—peer counselor Tim Beveridge and peer specialist Kenah Roberts.

This new version also features a moving “In Your Voice” story contributed by Angela, an individual living with psychotic symptoms; she offers another deeply personal perspective on what recovery can look like.

Together, they explore what psychotic symptoms are, how they can be recognized, and how early intervention, compassionate support, and community understanding can lead to meaningful recovery.
