With more than half of the nation’s school districts experiencing teacher shortages, many parents, teachers, and institutions are left to wonder why this is happening. Cabrillo College student Kaya Henkes-Power has this profile of her mother, Heather Henkes, a San Diego-based art teacher working at Mission Bay Highschool. Starting her career in 2000, Henkes has been an art teacher for twenty-three years. She talks about her personal experience as a teacher and about the evolution of her career and navigating through the pandemic. She speaks about how the teacher shortage is affecting her school campus, what the future of teaching might look like, and how school districts can best support their teachers.
