Some shocking campaign revelations became widely public recently, a result of four current councilmembers being present at fundraiser for Third District Supervisor candidate, Shebrah Kalantari-Johnson. Community Activist, Ann Simonton was present at this meeting and made a recording. The event was put on by a political action committee (PAC), “Santa Cruz Together.” and apparently, from the recording, openly solicits campaign donations for Kalantari-Johnson above the individual limit of $525. PAC’s can give unlimited donations, but are not allowed to coordinate their efforts with individual candidates. Did this May 2nd gathering at a local winery step over the line into illegal political fundraising? Former Mayor Tim Fitzmaurice and Santa Cruz Public Works and Transportation Commissioner, Candace Brown discuss the specifics of the Brown Act, political fundraising, and what is expected of sitting councilmembers and commissioners, this week on “Talk of the Bay” with your host, Chris Krohn.
On part two, hometown political hero, rascal, and recalled councilmember, Drew Glover, is interviewed from his new home in Selma, Alabama. Glover has directed the Jubilee Bridge Crossing project for the past two years since developer and real estate money succeeded in recalling him from the Santa Cruz City Council. He stood up for the homeless, renters, and the environment, but that was apparently too much for luxury housing advocates who were intent on cleaning up Surf City. Glover discusses his joys and heartaches since the recall, his new life in the South, and divulges some personal reminiscences from his tumultuous shortened stint on the city council. Talk of the Bay, this Tuesday on KSQD 90.7 and KSQD.org
