Ever drive around Santa Cruz and see all the lights out in many homes, especially along West Cliff and in many upscale condo complexes? A lot of people have second and third homes in Santa Cruz while their actual residence is in another city. A good number of these homes could be rented out, but instead they remain empty, occupied by the owners a few weeks, or even weekends during the year. Cyndi Dawson and Josh MacCallister aim to change this situation. Following on the successful vacant home taxes in Oakland, Washington, D.C., and Vancouver, Canada, Dawson and MacCallister are part of a group campaigning to either get and empty homes rented out or else, pay a hefty tax. They are looking to place this initiative on the November 2022 ballot by collecting signatures in the city of Santa Cruz. Who would be taxed and how much would the tax be? These are critical questions we will explore with our guest on Tues. from 5-6p on Talk of the Bay with your host, Chris Krohn. Join us.
