Talk of the Bay, Tuesday, August 17, with Chris Krohn and Santa Cruz Councilmember Sandy Brown: No new sales taxes!
There will be no sales tax increase this year in the city of Santa Cruz. Councilmember Sandy Brown recently cast the lone deciding NO vote. The city council majority was looking to place an emergency ballot initiative on the Sept. 14th Recall election for the Governor. Councilmember Brown wanted a significant amount of the estimated $7 million to go towards raising the salaries of the lowest paid city workers. Mayor Donna Meyers said “No Way!” and Brown cast her vote against raising the tax. Because this was an “emergency,” the vote had to be unanimous. Brown was standing up for workers, while the Mayor took a pass. Brown comes to Talk of the Bay on August 17th at 5pm to discuss why she rejected this sales tax increase.
