Can community activists still be activists after they’re elected to public office? When former community organizers get elected, good things can happen. Avowed socialist and now Redwood City councilmember Lissette Espinoza-Garnica is a first-gen, queer, non-binary proud ChicanX, an open abolitionist and a democratic socialist and she is shaking up local government. James Coleman ran on an unapologetically progressive platform and won a seat to become the youngest member ever to be elected to the South San Francisco city council. In 2020, Alex Lee, then 25, became the youngest member to be elected to the California State Assembly since 1938. Lee was endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America and Bernie Sanders is a political hero. How do these community activists exercise their progressive vision while now occupying municipal and state government?

Tune into Talk of the Bay and find out. Your host Chris Krohn will press these activist elected officials on the difficult issues facing California: housing, homelessness, and climate change.
