KSQD’s Monday Night at the Opera presents Richard Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg Acts 3 and 4, June 30, 7 to 10 p.m. Cast includes Theo Adam as Hans Sacks, Helen Donath as Eva, René Kollo as Walter, Peter Schreier as Martin with Herbert von Karajan conducting the Staatsoper Dresden Chorus and the Staatskapelle Dresden.
It is the longest opera in the entire common repertoire, clocking in at around four and a half hours so I had to divide it up. It is Richard Wagner’s only comedy composed while a mature artist. It’s based on a historical figure set in an authentic 16th century Nuremburg. No holy grail, magic sword, gold rings, Viking helmets, phantom ships, or swan boats — sorry. Just an avuncular cobbler and some “amateur” singers.
