Bestselling author of Palo Alto Malcom Harris is just now releasing his new book, What’s Left: Three Paths Through the Planetary Crisis. This joint program for the Moment of Truth show and Talk of the Bay features Harris in conversation with Meilin Obinata, roughly six months after Obinata interviewed him for Moment of Truth about his book on eugenics, capitalism and the history of Silicon Valley, Palo Alto.
The show connects current events and local issues to concepts from the book such as: why is the left perfectly situated for disaster councils, how does climate change touch on issues such as local agricultural issues such as saltwater intrusion, Moss Landing lithium ion battery facility fire, people living in tents, social lessons from COVID, and how capitalists apparently can’t stop murdering women farmers around the globe? Harris also mentions his recent book review of “Abundance.” Why do we need multiple strategies from the left, in order to save the planet? And what does it really mean to be “left”?
In “What’s Left?” Harris wrote: “If oil is valuable, and if value is the principle by which we organize life on earth, then oil is life, even as its continued extraction and combustion also assuredly means death.” What do we do about this conundrum? Is it too late? Is it never too late to try? And do we need every viable approach to try to fix the mess we are in?

Malcolm Harris appears at Bookshop Santa Cruz on April 24th at 7pm for a FREE public reading and talk about What’s Left.
