Dreams and the Power of Story with Sue Scavo

/

We speak with Embodied Dreamwork practitioner Susan Marie Scavo about the power of story in our lives and in our dreams. We talk about how stories are so much more powerful than statistics and also why certain scenes from movies make their way into our dreams. Sue addresses often-forgotten aspects of the Christmas story and how it holds hope and also trauma.

“Myths are public dreams, dreams are private myths.” Joseph Campbell. Sometimes cultural stories like fairy tales and myths can shed light on the deeper meanings of our dreams even if we didn’t know the myth in advance. In that context, we touch on epigenetics and inherited trauma.

Trigger warning! We talk about some disturbing dreams of self-mutilation.

We take two calls, the first from Jim of Bronxville, NY who shares a dream about a man whose cut-off arm was somehow miraculously regrowing. He speaks about a practice called Feeding Your Demons. And we take a call from Talk of the Bay host Christine Barrington who speaks about her Celtic-themed dream about hidden snakes ready to be brought out in the open and arrow slits that bloom into rose-colored stained-glass windows.

Bio: Sue Scavo is a writer, poet and Embodied Dreamwork Practitioner. In all of her practices – dreaming, writing, poetry – her work is concerned with the implied journey, the unspoken (unnoticed) epic that happens in singular (often staggered) steps. The movement of word to word, paragraph to paragraph, image to image in both landscapes.

Sue has been an embodied dreamwork practitioner for over 20 years, working with individuals and in group settings. She has taught and facilitated Dreamwork retreats and writing and Dreamwork retreats all over the US and Europe at such venues as Esalen, Kripalu and Hollyhock. She is the co-founder of Students of the Dream with her partner Bill St. Cyr. Sue also holds an MFA in poetry. Her poems have been published in journals such as Asterix, Poet Lore and anthologies such as What Have You Lost edited by Naomi Shihab Nye.
